What’s so amazing about grace? Many people don’t know because they don’t really know what grace is. Some people say “grace” is being nice to others. Some people say “grace” is a blessing before a meal. But what does the Scripture say?
The Scripture defines grace in this way: Even when you were dead in sins, God made you alive with Christ (Eph. 2:5). The reason most people cannot grasp the “amazing-ness” of grace is because most people don’t comprehend the problem that grace addresses, namely spiritual death.
“And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked” (Eph. 2:1–2). Even if you are not as bad as you could be, you are still in sin. This is terrible news, but we must be honest.
As terrible as that news is, it is precisely what makes grace so sweet. The Scripture says: “But God … even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ — by grace you have been saved” (Eph. 2:4–5).
How did God make us alive? The Scripture says He gave us a gift called faith: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God” (Eph. 2:8). The “faith” spoken of here means you believe: 1) God’s Son died to pay for your sin and was raised again the third day and 2) your turning from sin to trust His Son’s sacrifice will save your soul. At that moment, faith makes you alive with Christ.
What’s so amazing about grace?
Of all the people and places in the world, God looked down and saw a lifeless boy without hope in Alabama. God had compassion and made him alive with Christ. That boy trusted the Son and was raised to life. That boy is writing to you today asking: Will you turn from your sin and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ too?
Then perhaps we can sing together: “Amazing grace! How sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me.”
I wonder if you are dead in your sins? Are you walking according to the ways of the world? Are your desires fleshly? Let me tell you about the grace of God.
