Want to know God?

Antioch East Baptist Church, Greenville

The sky is falling!" "The sky is falling!" These are the famous words of Chicken Little, who caused a furor after being hit on the head. The only problem was there was nothing to it. It is easy to get caught up in causes and hop on bandwagons. We hear a lot about "global warming/climate change." We are being urged to take action, like changing the kind of light bulbs we use, driving our car less, setting the thermostat higher, using less energy. There are even people with psychiatric problems because of their concerns about their "carbon footprint." As my grandmother would say, "What in the cat hair is that?" It seems the hype around this has almost reached "fever" proportions (excuse the pun).

However, there is a "global warming" ahead that is much more certain than the hype going around today. Peter referred to it like this, "… the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up" (2 Pet. 3:10).

This passage speaks of a time of judgment that will occur in the future. When? No one knows. But there is an appointment we all must keep. It’s called death. No one backs out of this appointment, and the amazing thing is most of us do not prepare for this one event that is sure to occur in our lives. We stick our head in the sand and pretend we are the exception.

However, only when we are prepared to die are we prepared to live. Knowing God prepares us for both death and life. The title of this article asks a question, "Want to know God?" The answer for every one of us is "yes." You want to know God. Sure you do. Everyone does even though he or she may not realize it. That’s the missing piece of the puzzle of life. You can find everything you’re looking for in God’s Son, Jesus. Here’s how to know God — it’s as simple as our ABCs: A — Admit you are a sinner. B — Believe in Jesus. C — Confess Him as your Lord.

What does it prosper a man, woman, boy or girl if he or she saves the environment and loses his or her soul? God is all about saving people like you and me. Want to know God? He sure wants you to.
