Want to Know God?

Are you saved and sure? Please do not blush, shy away or stare into the ethereal cloud of deep thought and contemplation. It is rather a simple question and one that begs a forthright response with utmost confidence. Frankly, as a pastor I would be remiss not to suspect that some harbor doubt, insecurity and spiritual confusion on the certainty of personal salvation. Therefore, the question before us is relevant, “Are you saved and sure?” For this purpose, I mention three assurances: belief in God’s Word, a changed life and the indwelling Holy Spirit.

Assurance of salvation comes from believing God’s Word (2 Tim. 2:15). Speaking on the issue the Lord said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth My Word and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (John 5:24). Believe in the Word.

Assurance of salvation comes from a changed life. When Christ enters a life there is a nature change. Second Corinthians 5:17 reads, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are new.” Look for the change.

Salvation assurance also comes from the indwelling Holy Spirit. No one can live the Christian life apart from the Holy Spirit. Paul wrote in Romans 8:9 and 14, “Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His. … For as many as are led by the Spirit, they are the sons of God.” Salvation is dependent on the work of the Spirit. “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit,” Jesus said, “He cannot enter the kingdom of God” (John 3:5). Be in the Spirit.

Confidence in one’s salvation prompts activity, vibrancy and enthusiasm in our walk with God. Doubting robs us of inner joy and peace. Be assured of your salvation; study the Word. Look for the change. Be in the Spirit (1 John 5:13).
