Any knowledge we have about God is a result of Him purposely and intentionally revealing Himself to us. He has done this at many times and in many ways. In fact, for all eternity God’s people will continue to be amazed as He reveals more and more about Himself to us. And because the wonders and glories of God are inexhaustible, this revelation will never cease. Certainly one of the greatest joys of heaven will be experiencing the delight of receiving new knowledge about God day after day for all eternity.
But as great as this will be it is hard for me to imagine any knowledge I receive about God in eternity being more delightful than what He has revealed to us about Himself on the cross of Jesus Christ. Do you want to know what God is like? Look to the cross.
The cross teaches us at least two things about God. First the cross shows us how seriously God takes our sin. Because of our treachery and rebellion against God, His perfect Son, Jesus Christ, had to die a death He did not deserve. That’s how seriously God takes sin.
But we also learn something else about God at the cross. For God to willingly place His one and only Son on the cross also shows us something of the depth of God’s love for the world. Romans 5:8 tells us, “God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
The cross was indeed the place where God’s wrath against sin and His love for His people were simultaneously put on display for the whole world to see. And because of what Jesus accomplished on the cross, I can know God personally and so can you. Paul says in Romans 5:10, “While we were [God’s] enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son.” Yes, “Christ … suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring us to God” (1 Pet. 3:18).
Want to know God? Look to the cross and trust in and consider the forgiveness and salvation Jesus purchased for you there.
