I was recently greeted by an older lady crying inside the church office. I began to talk with her and the lady expressed many challenges that she and her family were facing. She was slowly losing her hearing, which was evident in her speech, and that was contributing to a loss of income. She stated she felt abandoned in so many ways. After I spoke with her, I began to consider how we all at some point and time must have felt abandoned. The enemy will always try to isolate us by making us feel hurt and alone. So how do we overcome abandonment?
First we must have faith in Jesus. Faith is admitting that we are sinners in need of saving. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.” Not only must we admit and believe that Jesus is Lord but we also must confess by telling others about the hope within us. When you know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior you are never alone because His presence is always within you.
Second we must trust His Word. We must live each day trusting His promises that He is sovereign and in control of all of life’s storms. We must search the Scriptures and memorize His promises knowing that His goodness will prevail. We must live out Proverbs 3:5–7: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not unto your own understanding but in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.”
Third we must call upon God. Psalm 145:18a says, “The Lord is near to all who call upon Him.” What a glorious promise to know that He is near us. When we call upon Jesus we have assurance that we are not abandoned or alone.
If you are feeling abandoned and alone today, may you be encouraged to take the necessary steps to have faith in Jesus, trust His promises and call upon the name of the Lord — knowing that you are not abandoned but loved by Jesus.
