One of the aspects of our culture that has become very clear over the past few decades is that we have become post-Christian. By that I mean we have become more and more secularized in every aspect of our culture. We can see this in our politics, education and media. Secularization is the more common thought in America today.
It is also important to understand that our culture is a melting pot. We do not have one definable value system we believe in or live by.
Because we are a secular culture with many different value systems and worldviews, we also have many different beliefs competing against one another every day in many different ways.
If you are not careful, then you can easily become confused by the many different ideas and viewpoints calling out to us each and every day. Let me mention a few of these viewpoints that have become so prevalent in American life.
Pragmatism is a philosophy that is not concerned with finding ultimate truth. Truth simply becomes “that which works.” The pragmatist would simply say, “If it works, then that’s all I’m concerned about.”
Pluralism teaches that there is no absolute truth. There are relative truths but no absolute truth. The pluralist might say, “What’s true for you is not true for me and vice versa.”
Hedonism also has a strong hold in our American thought. The hedonist lives to enjoy pleasure and avoid pain. “If it feels good, then do it” becomes his or her motto.
The truth is none of these competing ideas that have become so popular in America today will ever work or bring any individual lasting hope or satisfaction. Only the “real truth” can do that. And that real truth can be found in the person of Jesus Christ.
Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Now that is truth you can bank your life on.
Maybe you have tried to live according to what the culture says is true and have found only emptiness and hopelessness. I invite you to turn your life over to Jesus and start a relationship with Him. I promise you will be satisfied with Him.
