Retired Baptist Pastor
She wobbled into my office, flopped into a chair, smirked at me from beneath a wide-brimmed hat and said, “I don’t believe in God.”
To which I replied, “Well I’m glad to inform you that God’s existence does not depend upon your belief.”
A surprised look flashed across the face of the faded flower child, who though she was in her 30s, still thought she was a genuine hippie. When she made no response, I continued, “Even if you did believe in a god, you also need to know the Bible tells us that demons believe in God and tremble (James 2:19). So, sweetheart, you need to believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, and then you can be saved.”
No, she wasn’t saved right then and there, but it did catch her attention. About three months later, she wobbled down the aisle one Sunday morning and informed me she now believed in God and, moreover, wanted Jesus to be her Lord.
Just before she was baptized, I asked her, “Do you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and do you believe in your heart God raised Him from the dead?”
She smiled (not smirked) and said, “I do.”
The arrogance today of the pseudo intellectuals and their boasting of their disbelief in God simply amaze me. They seem to think their atheism erases God from heaven, their agnosticism blots Him out of history and their denials will remove Jesus as the Messiah and reduce Him to a so-so, ho-hum man.
Most of us were lucky enough to grow up believing in God, the Creator of heaven and earth. Now Mother Earth has replaced God the Father, and evolution has become the new god responsible for all life, including us higher apes — the human beings. Fiddlesticks!
Today we are engaged in a great battle between science and religion, the university and the Church, fact and faith. I don’t know about you, but I believe the God who made the facts gave us faith.
It’s about time we Christians stopped being intimidated by those who don’t believe in God and started sharing with them the good news of Jesus.
Amen? Amen.
