One day when I was fly-fishing, at the exact moment I lifted my arm to whip my line behind me, a very small bream struck at the fly.
In a split instant, the hook sunk deep into its lip, and it set sail at lightening speed, flying distances before unknown to its immediate family, to destinations far from the comforts of its home.
When I brought my line back into the boat, the fish was lifeless, disoriented and, if fish can think, I can only imagine it might have been thinking, “Mom never taught me to avoid that for breakfast.”
In just a flash, Satan will hook us for taking one glance too long, stepping one foot too far or flirting with even just the outskirts of sin just to taste that “free spirit” of life.
And all of a sudden, we are off to unpleasant places faster than we have ever traveled, finding painful misery and memories from which we wonder if we will ever be set free.
I did set that little fish free, but Satan will not do so for you.
The fish has little chance when we bring the luscious “looking” fly (hook included) right into its home. Satan has brought his lures right into our homes, and his hooks are always disguised until it’s too late.
But praise the Lord, God sent His only Son, Jesus Christ, right into our life to deliver us from our bondage (John 3:16; Matt. 1:21).
The result of our chasing sin is death (Rom. 6:23), but God loves us even while we are ungodly sinners and that is seen so clearly in Christ’s dying for us on the cross (Rom. 5:6–8).
Today ask Jesus to forgive you for “striking” at the lures of Satan and this world.
Thank Him for providing that forgiveness by dying for you to pay the price for your sin and invite Him into your life to set you free from bondage. He will guide you to pleasant places you’ve never seen, especially that path to heaven, where we will live with Him for eternity.
He is waiting for you to get hooked on Him today (Rev. 3:20).
“Seek the Lord while He may be found” (Isa. 55:6).
