We are created in the image of God (Gen. 1:27). We are personal beings. So it follows that God is a person also. In fact, the Bible teaches that He is a triune person — Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Consequently if we wish to get to know God, then we can do so pretty much in the way that we get to know other people.
Yes, we can see what He has done in nature and His hand directing history, we can experience His care in our everyday lives and we can hear Him speak directly to us through the Holy Spirit. Prayer, Bible study and reflective meditation are the primary methodologies for getting to know God.
Certainly one of the clearest illustrations of how we get to know God is the growing relationship in a good marriage. Think for a minute about how you got to know your spouse. You met him or her, perhaps through an introduction by a mutual friend. You spent time with this person talking, working, sharing, playing and exploring shared interests and values. You found yourself attracted to this person. You exchanged gifts. You wanted to be with this person all of the time. You fell in love with this person. You made a commitment to spend the rest of your life with this person.
As you entered into marriage, you made adjustments in how you lived in order to please the one whom you loved. In the processes of everyday life, you and your loved one shared experiences, good and bad, which strengthened and deepened your love. And as the years of shared love passed, you grew more like each other. This loving experience transformed you.
God is love. He loves each and every human being. He offers to have an intimate, loving relationship, an intensely personal and transforming one, with anyone who will agree to love Him. And while He loves us just as we are, He wills to bless us by making us free, joyful and effective people.
Our relationship with God begins by saying “yes” to His invitation to walk with, talk to and lean upon Him. For specific instruction in how to initiate this kind of a relationship with God, ask a Christian friend or pastor.
