With the Senate out of town, the government shutdown is set to continue through at least today (Nov. 3), cutting off funding for Head Start programs that serve low-income families, CBS News and the Associated Press report.
About 140 Head Start centers nationwide — supporting 65,000 children — began losing federal funding Nov. 1. In Wisconsin, nine centers are closing, leaving some teachers temporarily laid off. Other programs in Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Oklahoma are also shuttering, furloughing hundreds of staff, according to news outlets.
