The third annual CyberCamp sponsored by the State Board of Missions (SBOM) will be held at Shocco Springs, May 7–8.
Participants may take eight hours of training in more than a dozen technology-related topics, said Keith Hinson, communications associate at the SBOM.
Several topics may be of special interest to those serving in specific church and associational leadership positions:
Secretaries. Numerous courses may benefit secretaries and other ministry assistants who are struggling to utilize their computer’s programs more effectively, Hinson said.
Software-related topics include: Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Outlook, Wireless Networking and Microsoft Access.
Clerks. Southern Baptist Directory Services, better known as SBDS, will be taught by Jason King, SBOM computer services associate.
“We will help clerks learn how to file their Annual Church Profile (ACP) information on-line,” King said. “This will cut down on paperwork. Also churches can manage their mailing list free of charge through SBDS. It’s a powerful tool.”
Webmasters. Two course offerings should be of interest to those with a responsibility for establishing and maintaining a church’s Web presence, Hinson said.
‘High-octane’ training
First, two representatives from LifeWay Christian Resources in Nashville will be present to teach about LifeWayLink — a service offering a free Web site to any Southern Baptist church. Paid LifeWayLink options will also be discussed.
Second, “Webmastering 101” will be taught by Cord Hamrick, a computer trainer from Acworth, Ga.
“This will primarily benefit those using web hosts other than LifeWayLink,” Hinson noted. “Cord is a highly talented computer communicator and is back at CyberCamp for the third year. He will provide six hours of ‘high-octane’ training for Web site managers.”
Six hours of training will be offered to “newbies” — those who are absolutely new to computers and the Internet — during a class entitled “Getting Started with Computers and the Internet.”
Jeff Hammack, SBOM computer services coordinator, encouraged those who know little or nothing about computers to participate.
“If you barely know how to turn on your computer, or maybe a little more, this class is for you,” Hammack said. “We will help you understand why and how your computer works, how to begin using it for personal and ministry purposes, and how to ‘surf’ the Internet while avoiding pitfalls.”
Other topics will include:
Worship technology software, digital video and photography, genealogy and the Internet.
“Trading Spaces on Your Computer (10 Great Ways To Keep from Running out of Space).”
“A Crash Course in Search Engines and Other On-Line Research Tools” and wireless networking.
The cost is $84.50 for a double-occupancy room with other rates also available. To register, call Shocco Springs at 1-800-280-1105. For a detailed schedule, go on-line to www.alsbom.org/cybercamp. (SBOM)
