For the past three years, members of Mount Moriah Baptist Church, Weogufka, in Central Baptist Association have gathered with local emergency responders to commemorate the events of Sept. 11, 2001.
The service is intended to honor those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks and to show appreciation for the work and sacrifices of Coosa County firefighters from six local fire departments, all of whom volunteer their time and services for the benefit of their communities.
This is the second year that the local sheriff’s department has also been included in the service.
“It’s been very meaningful to have it, to our church, and to the fire departments, and to the sheriff’s department,” said Linda Goswick, a member of Mount Moriah who helped plan the event.
In addition to featuring speakers and music, the service recognized each firefighter and officer who attended and presented them with either a firefighter’s New Testament or a law enforcement New Testament.
About 100 people attended the service, which was followed by a dinner hosted by the church.
“Our church thoroughly enjoys doing that and letting the volunteers know we appreciate them,” Goswick said. (TAB)
