A team of 14 from West Hartselle Baptist Church traveled to Jenkins, Ky., July 18–22 to work with Lester and Bessie McPeek, Mission Service Corps missionaries with the North American Mission Board who direct a ministry called God’s Love From a Diaper Bag.
Led by Iris Wiggins, a member of the Morgan Baptist Association church, the team consisted of eight women and six men. The men hung Sheetrock in the new ministry center building and by the end of the week, had hung and painted all the Sheetrock. The women, who had been collecting baby and household items, clothing and shoes since January, threw a baby shower for 25 mothers at the local health department. They used the baby items they collected to make layettes, which included diapers, blankets, baby shampoos and soap and small toys, and gave them to the attendees. The clothing and other items were distributed in the city park. Most of the people who came to the distribution site were looking for school clothes for their children, Wiggins said.
“We got a blessing out of it, and we felt good about what we were able to do,” she said.
