Retired Alabama pastor Fred L. White died March 2. He was 88 years old.

White served as a Southern Baptist pastor from 1956 until 1995. During that time he served Selmont Baptist Church, Florala; and at the time of his retirement, he was pastor of First Baptist Church, Tuskegee.

White was called into the ministry during a revival at First Baptist Church, Brewton.

He received degrees from Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky., and an honorary degree from the University of Mobile.

Besides serving as pastor, While also worked on a special project with the North American Mission Board and the Virginia Baptist Convention that included serving for two years as pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Stonega, Va.

He and his wife, Mayo, also spent one year serving in Dedido, Guam, and Dakar, Senegal, with the International Mission Board.

White also served Alabama Baptists on the Alabama Baptist administrative committee and on the executive committee.

White was preceded in death by his wife. He is survived by one son, three daughters, his sister and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
