George Yeargan Williams, retired director of missions (DOM) for Etowah Baptist Association, died Oct. 11. He was 80.
An Alabama native, Williams earned a bachelor’s degree from Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham and graduated from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. Samford later awarded him an honorary doctorate of divinity.
Williams served as pastor of churches in Alabama and Kentucky before becoming DOM for Etowah Association in 1966. During his 26-year tenure, the association established a student center at Gadsden State Community College and developed partnerships in Paraguay and Wyoming. An associational office and a missionary home were also built during his time there.
Williams was a member of Twelfth Street Baptist Church, Gadsden. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Frances; a son; a daughter; two grandsons; and three granddaughters. (TAB)
