Peyton Williams is the Escambia Baptist Association disaster relief director. He leads a group of about 50 chain saw and feeding team volunteers from different churches in the association. He also coordinates monthly missions trips to Waveland, Miss., where volunteers from Escambia County help Shoreline Park Baptist Church and community residents with construction work.

Q: What led you to do disaster relief work?
A: Hurricane Ivan. It hit Escambia County and tore it up. Seeing other disaster relief teams come in and the help that they gave us, we wanted to help others when they needed it.

Q: Why have you continued this ministry?
A: Since we went to Waveland that first month, there was such a dire need for help down there.

Q: What does the ministry demand?
A: Time.

Q: What do you get from the ministry?
A: We get the enjoyment of helping other people and using the talents that God has given us.

Q: How do family members support you?
A: It’s just me and Barbara at home, and we are in it 100 percent. We go every time we get a chance.

Q: How do you see yourself involved in this in the future?
A: Helping in the administrative part of the work in Waveland.

Q: What difference will this ministry make for you in the future?
A: Seeing people (who have) lost everything makes you realize that you can live with a lot less physical things.
