Alabama Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) is working toward its goal to “help women become radically involved in the Mission of God” with a statewide leadership conference at Dawson Memorial Baptist, Homewood, in April.
WMU Executive Director Beverly Miller said “A Plan Worthy of Your Passion” is designed to train leaders of women’s ministry in local churches. The conference is scheduled for April 28-29.
“The purpose of this conference is to provide basic help for those beginning women’s ministry, new ideas for those who need a boost for their women’s ministry and networking and encouragement for all leaders,” Miller said.
Women’s ministry is a relatively new responsibility for Alabama WMU, but one Miller said provides exciting opportunities for women.
For the past year, Alabama WMU has been attempting to learn about the needs of churches and determine how to meet those needs. A state women’s ministry leadership team was formed, which recognized the need for leadership training.
Although some training has taken place in individual churches and associations, the larger statewide training will offer assistance to leaders on a variety of topics through workshops and general sessions.
Melissa Bowen, who was recently hired as Women’s Ministry Consultant at Alabama WMU, stresses the training “is designed to enable women to discover their God-given gifts for ministry, to search out the needs in churches and communities, and to match those needs with their gifts.”
The conference will begin with a praise and worship time April 28, followed by a general session led by Chris Adams, Women’s Ministry Enrichment Specialist at LifeWay Christian Resources in Nashville. Adams, who served as women’s ministry director at Green Acres Baptist, Tyler, Texas, for 12 years before joining LifeWay in 1995, will present three general sessions during the conference.
Workshops will be offered on a variety of topics including: starting a women’s ministry, leading Bible studies, establishing a leadership team, publicity and publications and mentoring programs.
Workshop leaders “have been chosen because of their experience and expertise in women’s ministry,” said Miller, “but this conference will be helpful to leaders in churches with women’s ministry alone or with a blend of women’s ministry and WMU.”
Bowen agrees Alabama WMU is interested in all aspects of the spiritual lives of Southern Baptist women.
“There has been tremendous interest in developing this area of ministry in our churches, and we are happy to be able to provide a conference that will equip women to enrich the lives of other women through practical, hands-on training,” Bowen said.
The cost for the conference is $20.
