James Dewel “J.D.” Wood, former Alabama Baptist pastor and director of missions, died April 11. He was 99.
Wood served as pastor of various churches from 1943 to 1972, including Mount Hebron Baptist, Cullman, in East Cullman Baptist Association; Mount Vernon Baptist, Jasper, in Walker Baptist Association; Meek Baptist, Arley, and First Baptist, Arley, both in Winston Baptist Association; West Point Baptist, Cullman, and Mount Hope Baptist, Crane Hill, both in West Cullman Baptist Association; Deatsville Baptist in Elmore Baptist Association; Daviston Baptist in Tallapoosa Baptist Association; and Old Bethel Baptist, Arley.
He also served as director of missions for West Cullman Association from 1956 to 1959. Wood also attended Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham.
Wood was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Arvie Denson Wood.
He is survived by one son, three daughters, 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. (TAB)
