Yahoo! Inc., the leading Internet portal, announced April 13 that it was removing all pornographic products from Yahoo! Shopping, Yahoo! Auctions, and Yahoo! Classifieds.
The decision affect sex-oriented videos and DVDs available through sellers on Yahoo!’s network. Also, Yahoo! will no longer enter into new contracts for adult related banner advertisements on the Yahoo! network. The implementation of these changes in the United States will take place over the next few weeks.
“At Yahoo!, we value the strong relationships we have with our members and have consistently listened to them,” said Jeff Mallet, Yahoo!’s president and chief operating officer.
“While Yahoo! has offered controlled access to adult products available via the Internet since launching our commerce services more than two years ago, many of our voiced concerns this week about some of the products sold by merchants on Yahoo! Shopping,” Mallett said. “We heard them and swiftly responded. We consistently strive to act responsibly and constantly evaluate our policies based on what our users tell us.” The announcement represents a policy reversal for the Web company, which expanded its pornography sales operation in early April. The move caught the attention of anti-pornography activists and led public outcry against the company. (EP)
