More than 600 middle and high school students and their church leaders from around the state gathered together for the annual Youth Choir Festival on Sept. 27 at First Baptist Church, Montgomery.
Choirs from 18 churches representing 13 associations led a service of worship which featured four combined choir anthems and one combined ensemble song.
Scripture readings and prayers led by students were featured as well as a focus on student missions work during the past year.
‘About discipling students’
According to Keith Hibbs, director of the office of worship leadership and church music for the State Board of Missions (SBOM), “Youth choirs are alive and well in Alabama. This festival is not only an encouragement to churches wanting a vital student choir ministry, but also a reminder that choir is really about discipling students by teaching sound theology through lyrics, developing musical skills, encouraging group building and providing missional activities.”
SBOM helped organize the event this year.
