Herbert Evan Zeiger Sr., who was active for many years in Baptist life, died Aug. 30. He was 88.
Born in Gadsden, Zeiger served as a lay preacher, evangelist and interim pastor of several Alabama Baptist churches. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Pell City, at the time of his death.
Zeiger, who earned a chemical engineering degree from Auburn University, worked at the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions from 1954 to 1956 and from 1985 to 1986 in what is now the office of Cooperative Program and stewardship development.
He assisted with the 1957 move of Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham to its present Lakeshore Drive location. Zeiger went on to serve in various positions at the school, retiring as vice president of financial affairs in 1984.
Zeiger, who moved to Pell City after his retirement, was also active in missions, having traveled to Nigeria, Taiwan, South Korea and Hong Kong and throughout the United States.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Gene; five children; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. (TAB)
