IRIGWE, Nigeria — Muslim Fulani extremists are suspected of killing three Christians and injuring five others in attacks in Nigeria’s Irigwe area, reports the advocacy group International Christian Concern.
Five people were attacked Dec. 31, 2021, going home from an annual prayer meeting for Christian communities of Irigwe chiefdom. Killed was Adamu Sunday, 38, who was burned beyond recognition. The four others suffered injuries, the report says.
A survivor said one of the Fulani militants declared this “the first attack for the new year” and warned that more would come in 2022, states the report.
“Attacks of this nature have been ongoing for the past 20 years,” said Jeff King, president of the ICC, based in Washington.
Around Christmas, three Christians were ambushed after a night of caroling. Gideon Amba, 33, and Laraba Sunday, 16, were shot to death. Veronica Sule was hospitalized with gunshot wounds, the report says.
Nigeria, which has a Muslim-led government, was No. 9 on Open Doors’ 2021 World Watch List of places most difficult to be a Christian.
