What began as a way to commemorate the 250th anniversary of America became a lego bricks competition for the children and youth within First Baptist Church Center Star in Killen.
“I think that lego building teaches problem-solving, critical thinking and fine motor skills,” said Tammy Brown, church librarian. “I always loved watching my kids build and get engulfed in a project.”
“Our church library has been a tremendous blessing to our congregation and a valuable resource for ministry,” said Pastor Shandy Dill. “Our dedicated library staff does an outstanding job of providing quality resources that encourage people of all ages to read, learn and grow while also creating meaningful opportunities for connection throughout our church family.”
Increased foot traffic
Dill said the summer competition was a “tremendous success, giving children and families a chance to express their creativity while creating a meaningful experience that made them feel valued and celebrated by our entire church family.”
The contest brought increased foot traffic into the church library.
“One of the greatest benefits was that it also brought parents, grandparents, family members and friends into the library, giving them an opportunity to see all that our church library has to offer,” said Kip McKee, administrative pastor. “Our library is more than a room filled with books — it is a ministry that helps people learn, grow, connect and strengthen their faith.”
Results
There were four age divisions: preschool-kindergarten, 1st-3rd grade, 4th-6th grade, 7th-12th grade.
The winners were: Owen Kelly, preschool-kindergarten, jet; Emmett Yarbrough, 1st-3rd grade, rubicon; Henry Yarbrough, 4th-6th grade, Earth’s orbit; and Kolton Springer, 7th-12th grade, battleship. Winners received a cash prize at the church’s back to school event.
Brown said the church plans to make it an annual summer promotion. She said the college/career set want to be included next year.
