Baptists respond to flood victims in Asia

As millions of people are displaced or affected by South Asia’s worst flooding in decades, Baptists are launching relief efforts.

Baptist World Aid (BWAid), the relief and development arm of Baptist World Alliance, has already sent $10,000 in aid to India — $5,000 each to two Baptist groups in Bengal.

The organization is also preparing to send $5,000 to a Baptist group in Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, six teams from a local Baptist ministry are at work providing flood victims with some dried food.
Many people in Bangladesh and in the rest of South Asia have taken shelter in whatever raised ground they can find and are relying on food drops. The annual monsoon often brings flooding to these countries, but this year’s rainfall has been well in excess of normal.

The International Mission Board (IMB) is also on the ground in affected countries preparing to provide relief to area residents through local believers.

According to the IMB, relief workers, materials and food are in place and Baptists in the area hope to begin distributing goods as soon as possible.
