Baptist pastor arrested by Zimbabwe police

KADOMA, Zimbabwe — Nine pastors, at least one of them Baptist, were arrested in Zimbabwe in late January.

Raymond Motsi, pastor of Bulawayo Baptist Church, was among a group of more than 300 pastors and church leaders who were attending a leadership seminar when the meeting was broken up by police and the nine arrested. Those arrested have since been released on Z$100,000 (nearly $400 U.S.) bail each.

In Zimbabwe, it is an offense to gather in groups of more than three without first seeking approval from the police.

Baptist World Alliance (BWA) General Secretary Denton Lotz said, “We appeal to the government of Zimbabwe to release all pastors who, in the performance of their gospel calling, are working for peace and justice. We call upon Baptists worldwide to pray for Zimbabwe and to write their governments encouraging release of unfairly accused pastors and leaders.”  (TAB)
