Dr. Wayne Flynt was a senior when I was a freshman at Howard College (now Samford University) in 1960. I followed him to Florida State in 1966, and his major professor, Dr. W.W. Rogers, was also mine.
I have always held Wayne Flynt in highest regard, and still do.
“I don’t understand how we could miss the logic of that,” says Dr. Flynt, speaking of concern for the poor in Matthew 25.
With all due respect to Dr. Flynt, the logic escapes me as to how he can expect his fellow Alabama Baptists to follow his lead in such matters as tax reform, church donations to schools, etc., when he has unapologetically supported a state lottery.
In fact, there is reason to believe that a lottery would exploit the very people for whom he wants to provide tax relief.
The golden rule of Matt. 7:12, “which is the Law and the prophets,” would lead at least me to believe that if Dr. Flynt wants his fellow Alabama Baptists to respect and even follow his social conscience, first he might consider respecting their social conscience, which might well be just as genuine and valid.
