I enjoyed and appreciated the two articles on page 5 of the Aug. 17 issue of The Alabama Baptist on Religion in the Public Schools.
In particular, I applaud your efforts to bring to light a higher common ground, rather than simply drawing the distinctions between two polarized positions.
Many educators and administrators have been dealing with this issue for years, keeping in balance a respect of the law of the land, the faith or nonfaith of others and the need for pragmatism.
The story of the teacher who felt compelled to offer a prayer on behalf of a lost student is a shining example of a "sensitive pragmatism."
Would that we could be mroe supportive of all who wrestle with this issue in such a manner, rather than using them as a rope in a rather fruitless tug-of-war.
