Over the past couple of months, there has been a lot of discussion across our state about constitution reform. There has also been a great deal of coverage in our Baptist press about proposed gambling legislation.
These two issues prompt some very important questions. Do we want the same representatives, senators and governor who tried to legalize the lottery and are still pushing to help video poker and dog track interests, in charge of rewriting our Alabama Constitution?
If our elected leaders cannot effectively manage the education budgets because of undue influence from special interests, can we believe that those same interests will not have undue influence in rewriting our constitution?
Finally, when one of our highest state officials says he does not want the people involved in the rewriting process, can we trust that the people’s interests will be best served in that process?
