• Dog racing was legalized in Macon, Greene, Jefferson and Mobile counties in the 1970s.

• VictoryLand was built in Shorter in Macon County in 1984.

• Birmingham had live horse racing 1987–1992, but all tracks have simulcast horse, dog racing.

• While video poker/gambling machines first appeared in Alabama in the late 1990s, electronic gambling came to VictoryLand in 2003.

• The Oasis hotel was built as part of the new casino atmosphere in late 2009.
