One of the most important aspects of church stewardship is the procedure for handling gifts to the cause of Christ. Many churches have decided to have an annual audit by an independent CPA as part of its stewardship program.
There are several benefits to having a church audit. It provides an official record of church receipts and disbursements for banks, insurance companies and so on. An audit demonstrates to the membership that funds are not being misused by the staff and provides recommendations to address any problems that do arise.
The relationship between church staff and an independent auditor who is familiar with churches is also important. It allows the staff to seek advice on contribution reporting, employment taxes, designated activities etc., from someone who is always objective. This creates an atmosphere that tends to head off problems and provides better control over finances.
Almost nothing can hurt a church’s effectiveness more than questions over finances. Used properly, a church audit can be part of a stewardship program that brings together ministry and accountability to help a church carry out the Great Commission.
