In a recent edition, The Alabama Baptist published excerpts from a reported phone call with missionary Mary Swedenburg which seriously misrepresented the process of her retirement and benefits being provided by the International Mission Board. …
We have dealt with flexibility and sensitivity with each missionary unit that has chosen to sever their relationship with the IMB rather than cooperate with the expected accountability. Mary has not been terminated. In fact, the board has received a letter from her expressing gratitude for the gracious support that is being provided.
She will be on full support for her accrued stateside furlough time of almost a year after leaving the field and will receive her special retirement grant of almost $15,000 to help with transition expenses in addition to travel and freight.
Due to her health needs, the board had agreed to continue to provide full insurance and health coverage, even during the few months of leave-of-absence, after which she will retire with full benefits and support.
