Shake Heaven
Victory World Music
Victory World Music, the praise-and-worship team for Victory World Church, is led by artist Montell Jordan, well known in the rhythm and blues world for his secular work with Def Jam Recordings.
“Shake Heaven” is a diverse, multicultural effort that’s difficult to pigeonhole. Certainly, strong R&B roots are present, but then artist Beckah Shae shows up to lend a thoroughly modern pop feel to the opening song “Yes You Are (Yeshua).” From there it just never stops: a diverse collection of genres from an ensemble cast of talented musicians.
“These Hands” is a beautifully crafted worshipful masterpiece, strong and deliberate in pace, stark in its simplicity, yet powerfully moving, both in its message and in its delivery. An unusual spoken word piece, “When I See You,” is a compelling vehicle of praise, and is probably a forerunner of prayerful praise set to music that we’ll hear a lot more of in the future. “The One” combines hip-hop, R&B and even a bit of rap into a danceable, singable track that should get us all moving. Twenty- and 30-somethings, here’s your new anthem.
Time will tell whether Victory World Church and its praise team, Victory World Music, are able to maintain and build the momentum they have now, but one thing is reasonably certain: These musicians will be shaping the sound of modern Christian music for a long time to come.
