University of Mobile President Mark Foley presented this year’s Shofar Award to David L. Hudson, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church, Semmes. The award goes to an Alabama Baptist State Convention minister who might not be recognized elsewhere.
Hudson said the “surprise phone call” from Foley was one of the many blessings he has received in his 48 years as a full-time pastor.
A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., Hudson attended Tennessee Temple College (now Tennessee Temple University) in Chattanooga and served as a youth pastor for Clifton Hills Baptist Church, Chattanooga. He then served churches in Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.
Hudson suffered a stroke in June 2003 and had to retire from active ministry. After two years of recuperation he became a missions volunteer with the North American Mission Board and served as evangelism coordinator for Mobile Baptist Association.
In the last five years Hudson has served five churches in the Mobile area as a volunteer pastor and is currently pastoring his sixth. His aim is to restart churches that are dying and lead them back to fruitful ministry. He and his wife, Delphia, have two daughters.
