Pen pals sought for Chinese students

Pen pals sought for Chinese students

The Fellowship of Baptist Educators (FBE) will soon be receiving hundreds of letters (about 2,000 or more) from Chinese students in grades 7–12 who are taking English.

Each letter will be written in English and addressed “To My American Friend.”

The Baptist Educators group is looking for Christian young people who will volunteer to answer the letters, using the guidelines and instructions that will be provided.

This program, which has been endorsed by the International Mission Board, makes a good missions activity for Sunday School classes, Acteens or Challengers groups, World Changers and any other Christian group.

Many have had the opportunity to share their faith with a Chinese pen pal. And since the letters are often read in class when they are received in China they can impact a whole room full of students.

Letters from China will be sent to any Sunday School teacher (grades 7–12) or youth leader who requests them. Requests should include the following:

-Name and mailing address of group leader who will receive the letters, along with telephone number and e-mail address if available.

-Number of letters needed from students in grades 7–9 and in grades 10–12.

-Name of church and group that is participating.

-A promise to see that every letter is answered.

Other Christian groups, such as First Priority or Fellowship of Christian Athletes may also participate.

American teachers who would like to correspond with a Chinese teacher may ask for teachers’ letters.

The letters will arrive from China during December and will be sent to those requesting them shortly after Jan. 15.

Direct all requests for letters to: John T. Carter, executive director of FBE; Samford University Box 292305, Birmingham, AL 35229; Phone 205-822-4106; e-mail j-carter@juno.com.

Deadline for receiving requests is Jan. 15, 2005.   (FBE)
