FACING PERSECUTION

FACING PERSECUTION

I am perplexed and bewildered by the response of many evangelical Christians in our nation to the recent terrorist attacks. Taking a page out of Jerry Falwell’s book, they seem to be looking for someone to blame for this terrible tragedy, including themselves or other Christians. It is called “bargaining” when we react to death and tragedy in this way. The underlying message is, if we can make a bargain with God regarding our poor behavior, maybe He will protect us from calamity. This seems to ignore God’s grace and love. If my neighbor were to die tomorrow in a car accident, I would not attempt to comfort his family by suggesting that it needs to clean up its act or it’s going to happen again. Sounds like Job’s comforters to me!

As is often the case, we may never know all of the reasons for this tragedy on this side of heaven, but I prefer to see it as persecution. Militant and fanatical religionists such as Bin Laden have chosen to strike out at America because we unashamedly stand for the One and True God, and for righteousness, freedom and justice. There are many other nations in the world much more secular and godless then America.

Why not hit, say, Sweden? We will suffer the brunt of maniacal hatred simply because we are the biggest and most influential target. Instead of wasting our time pointing fingers and trying to bargain with God, we need to be thankful that we live in this great land that God is so richly blessing.  Let us take comfort and be inspired in the words of Peter:

“Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you, but rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ” (1 Pet. 4:12–13).
