Interfaith plea made for Mideast peace

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt — An urgent plea for a cease-fire in the Holy Land has come from a gathering of Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders who met Jan. 20–21 in Alexandria, Egypt.

The meeting was convened jointly by the Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey and Sheikh Mohamed Sayed Tantawy, grand iman of al-Azhar al-Sharif in Cairo, the leading university of the Islamic world.

In the declaration, the religious leaders committed themselves to ending the violence and bloodshed in the Holy Land that denies people’s right to life and dignity.
