YORK, England — The Methodist Conference of Great Britain and the General Synod of the Church of England have overwhelmingly approved proposals for the two churches to enter into a covenant committing them to making it a priority to overcome the remaining obstacles to organic unity.
The covenant, approved by the General Synod meeting July 6, also commits each church to recognize the other as a true church in which the Word of God is authentically preached and the sacraments of baptism and the Eucharist are duly administered and celebrated.
The agreement further affirms that “there already exists a basis for agreement on the principle of episcopal oversight as a visible sign and instrument of the communion of the church in time and space.”
The Methodist church of Great Britain does not have bishops, and any unity scheme would involve it taking bishops into its system.
