One of my favorite Scriptures is the 23rd Psalm. The Psalm’s theme is stated in verse one, “The Lord is my Shepherd.” Knowing God comes from discovering the truths about Him that are boldly proclaimed by the author of Psalm 23. The sheep, the one speaking, acknowledges the presence, protection and provision of the shepherd as well as his confidence in the promise of the shepherd’s goodness and mercy following him always.
The promise of God is stated clearly in Genesis 3:15. God promises a deed of Eve will defeat Satan. Reading through the Old Testament the “seed promise” also is revealed as the “Lamb promise,” the Lord Jesus. The sacrificial system of the Old Testament points to the cross. John 1:29, speaking of Jesus, states, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
John 10:11 defines Jesus as the “Good Shepherd” who “gave His life for the sheep.” In John 10:7 and 9, Jesus states, “I am the door.” Once we enter that door through faith we can boldly declare, “The Lord is my Shepherd.”
The Bible shows that “all like sheep have gone astray” or as stated in Romans 3:23, “all have sinned and fall short.” Romans 6:23 tells us that “the wages of sin is death” but hope is found in that “while we were yet sinners Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8).
The miracle of becoming a sheep of the “Good Shepherd” is this: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Rom. 10:9).
