A voice in politics

A voice in politics

I read Bob Terry’s words “Encourage Your State Legislators” in the Jan. 31 issue. I wanted to relay my experience to Baptists across the state. As individuals, we often minimize the effect we have on state politics. Our perception is that legislators have their ears bent every day by people on issues. On a visit to the state Capitol and Statehouse in Montgomery with a leadership group, I heard some memorable words from a state legislator.

He was impressing upon us the importance of everyone’s involvement in the process. He recalled a certain piece of legislation that had come up. One of his colleagues had planned on voting for the legislation. This colleague approached him the next day with serious reservations about his vote. He was surprised at the response to the legislation. He mentioned receiving many phone calls from constituents. Upon further conversation, he had received six phone calls from his district. Yes, six. This number of calls was a significant reaction to a piece of legislation. He changed his vote.

Many Sunday School classes can get six phone calls in to a legislator, not to mention churches. Your phone call or contact with a state legislator may impact our state in ways you have never comprehended. Don’t take your voice for granted. Find your legislator’s phone number and e-mail and use them.
