A recent article in this paper reported First Baptist Church, Athens, Ga., severed ties with the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) in part because of a lack of “academic freedom” at SBC seminaries. If anyone can point to a single instance of academic coercion at Southeastern Seminary (SEBTS), where I serve as a trustee, I would be more than happy to bring the matter to the board for correction. Academic freedom is alive and well at SEBTS and at other SBC seminaries as well. Those who levy such charges and those who believe them do so either out of ignorance or ill-will.
