When Gadsden resident Ray Batemon asked his four-year-old granddaughter, Catherine Griffith, for a coat to take to Santiago de Maria, El Salvador, she did not quite understand.
But after explaining to her that four-year-olds in El Salvador were sleeping outside due to losing their homes in the recent earthquakes, Catherine happily handed over her hooded jacket.
Batemon and nine other Alabama Baptists, who returned from El Salvador March 17, gave away 200 jackets, 13 family-sized tents, 360 Bibles, 500 New Testaments and 500 tracts. The team also continued cleanup efforts, built one house and even experienced an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale.
Bobby Parker, pastor of Cook Springs Baptist Church in St. Clair Association, also got to visit the local hospital after dropping a piece of heavy metal on his toe. While taken out of the loop for manual labor, he helped with other activities.
Team members returned rejoicing over leading a woman and a man to the Lord, Batemon said.
