Fairview Heights Northside Baptist Church, Anniston, recently had several youth and adults participate in a week of missions work in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore areas.
The trip, coordinated by Youth on Mission from Rocky Mount, N.C., allowed the missions team to work at Camp Bennett, a camp for inner-city and at-risk children, as well as at The Helping Up Mission, a ministry for men who may be homeless or have problems such as addiction.
The work at Camp Bennett consisted of painting, doing yard work and planting flower gardens to prepare the camp for children during the summer.
At Helping Up Mission in Baltimore, the missions team worked sorting clothes for women’s shelters and getting clothes ready for those who come in off the streets. The missions team learned what the men are taught through the organization’s spiritual reformation and life preparation program: Money is not the answer for a fulfilled life — you must turn your entire life over to God.
Youth and adults from Meridianville Baptist Church in Madison Association traveled to Puerto Rico June 14–21 as a part of World Changers. David Hutto, associate pastor, led the trip to work on a Community Changers project there.
“Basically, we (worked) on anything in the community that needed to be done,” said Hutto.
The group hosted Vacation Bible Schools and backyard Bible clubs and worked on construction projects.
“A group from another church was there the week before we arrived, working on construction of the homes there,” Hutto said. “We finished (those things) that the group was not able to complete.”
The youth were able to choose which ministry teams they served on according to their own gifts.
The youth of Shades Crest Baptist Church, Birmingham, went on a missions trip to New York June 21–28. The group, comprised of 55 youth and adults, worked with two Chinese churches located in Chinatown: Overseas Chinese Missions and Trusting God Baptist Church. They also spent time serving at Covenant House for runaway teens in Manhattan.
Trinity Baptist Church, Roanoke, in the Randolph Baptist Association took a group of 19 volunteers — youth, adults and senior adults — to inner city Jacksonville, Fla., for a weeklong missions trip May 24–31.
Pastor Richard L. Richie led the trip, and 67 people accepted the Lord as Savior as a result of the church’s outreach.
The missions team was able to partner with Words to Works Ministry of North Main Street Baptist Church and Silver Glyn Baptist Church, Jacksonville.
Through this partnership, the team conducted street ministry, door-to-door evangelism, survey and flyer distribution, light construction, backyard Bible clubs and a Vacation Bible School.
The Trinity members also led two worship services on the Sunday they were in Jacksonville — one at Silver Glyn Baptist Church in southeast Jacksonville and one at Lighthouse Baptist Church in western Jacksonville.
Vestavia Hills Baptist Church, Birmingham Association, and Bethel Church in Los Mochis, Mexico, joined hands to build a medical clinic, church and community center in Los Mochis. This project, which was launched by 22 members of Vestavia Hills Church this summer, was funded by benefit concerts in May. Debbie Watson was coordinator of the project. Gary Furr is pastor.
Brookwood Baptist Church, Birmingham, took a team of volunteers on a summer missions trip to Aurora, Colo.
The team left June 1 and returned June 8 after working on construction projects there.
