Light for the Lost Boy
Centricity
“Light for the Lost Boy,” Andrew Peterson’s latest music project, is hard to pigeonhole. That should come as no surprise to those familiar with his body of work, both as a songwriter/performer and as a prolific writer. To say that the new record touches heavily on those things of God that frighten and confuse us ignores the hope and comfort embedded in most songs. This is truly not the feel-good praise music we love so much these days; rather, it’s a complicated, apparently deeply personal search for truth and understanding, with the complicated lyrical themes mirrored in the musical arrangements. Peterson’s emotive voice is perfect for this; the end result a most satisfying if slightly disturbing collection of musical stories.
Musically, “Light for the Lost Boy” will delight. Colors, textures and intriguing rhythms abound, similar to Peterson’s earlier work but stronger, more up-front. Longtime fans will find this new record familiar, and new listeners will find a huge palette to consider.
There’s a lot to like in all of Peterson’s work, and this new project is no exception. Maybe not an easy listen but satisfying.
