A fifteen-dollar fashion show at Greenbrier Road Baptist Church, Anniston, in Calhoun Baptist Association served as a launching pad for a new Christian Women’s Job Corps (CWJC) site in Calhoun County Sept. 16. An estimated 200 northeast Alabama women joined forces for the event. “Today we are celebrating eight years of prayer, planning and preparation,” said Mary Stinson, CWJC advisory council member.
The inaugural fashion show, live auction, silent auction and thrift closet generated $4,486 for the fledgling organization. More than 60 businesses and individuals donated products or services to be auctioned or given as door prizes, and 21 women assembled and modeled $15 outfits auctioned at the show to raise additional funds.
With several volunteers and a dozen trained mentors in place, Stinson said the ministry will begin with a handful of participants. During the yearlong program, classes in computers, interview preparation, social and interpersonal skills, dressing for success on a budget, Bible study and parenting will help equip participants for life.
