TOOWOOMBA, Australia — In an effort to fight violence against women, leaders in one Australian city are putting effort into ridding their community of porn.
Letitia Shelton, chief executive of City Women of Toowoomba, said a porn-free city “sounds very ambitious and unlikely,” according to Australia’s Huffington Post.
But if it can reduce the use of porn like anti-smoking campaigns cut smoking, that would be a victory, she said.
“Eighty-eight percent of porn displays violence against women, such as choking or gagging,” Shelton said. “We’re hearing more stories from women porn-addicted partners, where there has been a direct result of abuse from that.”
The city’s mayor, Paul Antonio, also is supporting the effort, as are other community organizations. (TAB)
