Baptists work to assist earthquake victims in Peru

Baptists are hustling to provide help to those in need after an 8.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Peru Aug. 15.

The earthquake affected the towns of Ica, Chincha and Pisco near Lima, Peru.
At press time, news reports indicated 510 were dead and 1,500 were injured. Many in the area were left homeless.
International Mission Board missionaries in the area — all of whom were reported safe — were working to provide aid to the victims.

Baptist World Aid, the relief and development arm of Baptist World Alliance, was also working to assist Peruvian Baptists, who have sent an assessment team to Ica.

Pastor Pepe Flores, president of the Convention of Evangelical Baptists in Peru, reported that one of the church buildings in Ica was damaged. (TAB)
