Beloved author, missions advocate dies

Barbara Joiner, longtime national Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) writer, popular speaker and missions advocate, died Nov. 18. She was 84.

A graduate of the University of Alabama, Joiner served in various WMU positions from writer for national WMU to chair of the board of directors for Alabama WMU. She also taught at Chelsea High School and Shelby County High School in Columbiana.

She has served as a member of the board of directors for The Alabama Baptist; senior high Acteens adviser at First Baptist Church, Columbiana; and Sunday School teacher at First, Columbiana, where she was a member at the time of her death.

Throughout her career Joiner published nine books and authored numerous magazine publications for national WMU. She also was a guest speaker for prayer retreats, WMU training sessions and other occasions in all 50 states, Bangladesh, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Dubai, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Germany, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Peru, Puerto Rico and Yemen.

Joiner is preceded in death by her daughter, Jacqueline. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Homer; one daughter; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. (TAB)
