Battle over abortion rights continues between states

Pro-choice legislators and governors in at least four states have responded to the wave of laws in several other states — including Alabama — to restrict or ban abortion. The pro-choice laws being passed are allowing for expansions of abortion rights.

Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo signed into law June 19 a bill that protects the right to abortion until the moment of birth. Her action followed the enactment of other laws striking down abortion restrictions in Illinois, Maine and Vermont.

The battle between pro-life and pro-choice legislators is ultimately about an attempt to reverse the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court that legalized abortion.
