The Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (SBOM) office of evangelism welcomed William “Billy” Harris into its fold as a part-time associate in June.
Harris, who is also pastor of Isney Baptist Church, Silas, was asked to join the SBOM staff by office of evangelism director Sammy Gilbreath. Gilbreath said Harris is a “great fit” for the position and was pleased when he accepted the regional evangelism strategist role.
Within the office, Harris assists associations and churches from Montgomery to the Florida state line in training believers to witness for Christ. This includes revitalizing churches, hosting workshops and planning intentional evangelism events.
Harris received a bachelor’s degree from Mobile College (now University of Mobile) before attending New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, where he was the recipient of two awards for academic excellence. He earned his doctorate from Andersonville Theological Seminary in Camilla, Ga., in 2008.
In regards to his extensive schooling, Harris laughingly refers to himself as being “educated beyond [his] intelligence.”
Harris ministered in churches in Yellow Pine, Coffeeville, Mobile, Linden, Pine Hill, Gallion, Dickinson, Thomasville, Butler, Nicholsville and Sweet Water before settling at Isney Baptist in July 2006.
As an evangelism strategist, Harris said he hopes to get Alabama back on track with the command of the Great Commission. “It’s a cutting-edge challenge and a really exciting opportunity,” he said. “It’s been so rewarding to go meet pastors and try to motivate and encourage them … it’s a lot of fun.”
Harris and his wife, Patty, have two daughters.
