Birmingham’s Liberty Park celebrates 125 years

Several special guests with personal ties to Liberty Park Baptist Church, Birmingham, helped it celebrate its 125th anniversary Nov. 6 during the two morning worship services.

Former Minister of Music Craig Biondi led worship. Pastor Emeritus Jim Bruton delivered a church history segment titled “Our Story.” Pastor Scott Guffin described Bruton’s message as a challenge for the future. “It was brief but so powerful and impactful,” Guffin said.

Woodlawn-native and former Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden served as the main speaker, and Guffin said Bowden’s message included a lot of humor, insight and encouragement. Bowden spent the first five years of his life at Woodlawn Baptist Church (now Liberty Park Baptist) and his parents were members of Woodlawn Baptist for years.

Birmingham Baptist Association, the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission and the Alabama Baptist State Convention each presented a certificate of recognition to Liberty Park Baptist.

Outside the sanctuary, the hallways were filled with historical church photographs, some dating back to the 1800s. Guffin acknowledged the volunteers who helped make the celebration a memorable event. He cited the planning teams involved, from those assisting with food to the décor. “Everything was beautiful,” he remarked.

“It turned out [to be] a made [to] order, perfect day,” Guffin said of the great weather, adding the church fed close to 600 attendees.
